This kit contains an Olympus 17mm, f2.8 wideangle Pancake lens and its corresponding VF1 direct viewfinder, plus the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 zoom lens.
The famous Olympus Pen trade name is reborn with this remarkable camera that combines the ease of use and portability of a digital compact camera with the interchangeable lens facility found on a digital SLR. The Olympus Pen E-P1 is also able to record movies in High Definition and has image stabilisation and dust reduction features. Also featured is a range of art filter effects from a range including Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Colour, Light Tone, Grainy Film and Pin Hole. These can be applied to both still images and movies.
Digital SLR QualityDue to the omission of a pentaprism and mirror assembly, the E-P1 is surprisingly small but retains the quality features found on digital SLR cameras. Using the ultra-compact Micro Four Thirds lens system, the E-P1 is also compatible (with an optional adapter) with standard Four Thirds lenses and old Olympus OM-series lenses (in manual modes). As regards image quality, this camera boasts a 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor for crystal clear details and image detail is processed using the TruePic V image processor, allowing Art Filters to be used and an ISO of up to 6400 to be realised. In-camera image stabilisation also means that camera shake is combatted whatever lens is fitted.
Creative ControlAs well as having art filters, the E-P1 can also superimpose several images in RAW mode. You can also choose from four aspect ratios.
In Movie Mode you can vary depth of field, angle of view and autofocus during recording. High Definition (1280x720p) can be captured for up to 5 minutes at 30fps in a single shot with high quality stereo PCM sound recording. Footage can then be played back in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio.
The Live Control interface; introduced on this model, enables you to view the effects of a selected function in real time on the large 3.0 LCD display.
In addition, i-Auto mode automatically chooses shooting preferences from six commonly used options, including portrait, landscape and night. As a bonus, e-Portrait mode is great for flattering people shots, smoothing away wrinkles and blemishes.
